The cycling vacation involves 12 days of riding and roughly 1100 kilometres of cycling - that's about 685 miles. We go through the most scenic parts of Austria and Italy. There will be vineyards, castles, rivers, gorges and mountains. There will be patisseries, markets, restaurants and bars.

Is travel included in the Price? Sorry no! We attract customers from all over the globe and so we have made the decision to leave our participants to arrange their own travel to the start and from the finish. We are Cycling Tour Operators and not travel agents. We can advise on the location of railway stations and airports which are convenient for the trip.
Can I hire a bike? On this trip we expect you to bring your own bicycle with you. We can sometimes assist with transport of bikes from the UK to the start and back from the finish.
What's included? For your money you get:
  • A 14 day vacation with cycling on a carefully planned route.
  • Your luggage is carried each day in our truck.
  • Our cycle mechanic is onhand for repairs.
  • Detailed route notes and maps.
  • There's a "Sag Wagon".
  • 14 nights in twin-share hotels and villas.
  • 15 breakfasts.
  • 7 group, evening meals including a celebration at the end.
  • Coach transfers.
How fit do I need to be? We expect you to be able to comfortably ride around 95 kilometres (60 miles) each day in varied terrain. It's NOT a race and the intention is for people to take their time over the riding and to soak up the places we are passing through. We will be able to offer a lift in the "Sag Wagon" to cyclist's with physical or mechanical difficulties. The responsibility to train a bit before you arrive lies firmly with you. Please Email us (info@wideopenroad.co.uk) if you need any more clarification of the type of fitness required.
What do I need to bring? A bicycle, some spending money, a toothbrush and a sense of humour.

Is there anything else I need? Yes, you MUST have a travel insurance policy that protects both you and your belongings and bicycle. For UK residents we can suggest a suitable policy. Consider the implications of any kind of accident during your vacation and take these responsibilities seriously.
How do I get there and away? We start in Salzburg, which has both an Airport and a mainline railway station. We finish in Verona, which again has an airport and a railway station.
How does a "typical day" work? Most days begin with breakfast in the hotel or villa. This will usually consist of breakfast cereals, fresh fruit, bread and jams and tea or coffee. After breakfast you pack up and put your luggage in our truck. You are now ready to hit the road. In your back pocket will be our detailed route notes and a map of the area in which today's ride takes place. Our cycle mechanic is around to offer any mechanical assistance that you may need. In the event that you have a major breakdown, we will try and keep you on the road by visiting local bike shops trying to find whatever parts are necessary. Where practical should you break down on the road, the mechanic will usually be along to help you out. As a last resort there will always be the support vehicle or "sag wagon".

The route we take passes through villages fairly regularly so you will be expected to fend for yourself both for lunch and water along the way.

When you reach the day's destination there will usually be afternoon tea. This comprises tea and biscuits and is meant to provide a small snack to see you through until dinner. After something to eat, you collect your luggage and set yourself up for the overnight stop.

In the evenings, sometimes we will have a group meal and sometimes you will be left to find your own food. The group meals are included in the price and are of a good quality. We try and book the best place that we can find and we arrange a menu with local specialities and character.

After dinner people generally have a few beers together and then head off to bed.
ADVICE: Whilst the weather is notoriously changeable in Europe, generally July in Austria and Italy will be warm. You may need to be ready for some hot days. Make sure that you have two water bottles on your bike and consider bringing a CamelBack if you are a person who gets through a lot of water. On many days, you will be riding through high mountains where the weather often changes quickly so be sure to have wet weather gear. The crew will advise you of any days where places to stop and eat and drink are limited.
